Anniversary Worship Service embraces Crestwood's past, present and future |
|||
In special worship services on January 25, 2009, the Crestwood congregation was encouraged to consider its past, present and future.
The services were held fifty years to the day after Crestwood's first communion service on January 25, 1959. (See "Celebration begins with reenactment of original Communion Service.")

Near the beginning of the service, about twenty Charter Members of Crestwood were called by name and led into the sanctuary by children who are now part of Crestwood's church family. The procession was rich with meaning and personal significance. For example, Sue Ann Cowgill was led by Christian Richardson, a grandchild of her fellow founding member, Ben Buckley.
At the beginning of the procession, charter member Warren Rogers delivered the same Christian cross that Crestwood used in worship during its first years of existence, including the two years it worshiped in the gym at Glendover Elementary School. The same cross had been kept in the home of his parents between Sunday worship services during those years, before the congregation moved into Hopper Hall in 1961.
During the Children's Sermon, Crestwood member and UK student Jack Jouett led the young children of Crestwood in displaying a "Happy Birthday" banner that will be kept by the church for the same children to see when they are adults, 50 years in the future.
The anthem was an original hymn, "Journey of Faith," written and perfomed by Katherine Steckler, a member of Crestwood's Chancel Choir. The title of the hymn refers to Crestwood's 50th Anniversary theme, "Celebrating a 50-Year Journey of Faith." The beautiful lyrics looked to the past, present and future of Crestwood.
Transitional Minister Tim Murtaugh delivered a sermon titled, "Drop What You're Doing," inspired by the New Testament account of the disciples who dropped their nets on the beach when Jesus called them to join him (Mark 1:14-20). He imagined the questions and reservations that might have caused those disciples to hesitate, no differently than the the founding members of Crestwood who were called to "drop what they were doing" to create a new church from scratch. Dr. Murtaugh then turned to the present and encouraged the members of Crestwood to embrace the challenges of the present with the same steadfast faith in God.
During the same worship service, Jim Havens was recognized as a "servant leader" of Crestwood for his fifty years of service in Crestwood's Chancel Choir. The 50th Anniversary Committee has announced that other members of the congregation will receive similar recognition during 2009, as a symbolic recognition of all servant leaders in the congregation.
Although he was a Charter Member of Crestwood, Mr. Havens did not process into the sanctuary with his fellow Charter Members. He was already on the Chancel, in the Choir, where he has been for fifty years.
The service was followed by a special anniversary luncheon in Crestwood's Mission Center. (See "Crestwood's 'Homecoming Luncheon' a huge success".)
